1. About Smart Key Vault
Smart Key Vault is a lightweight, locally-hosted password manager browser extension developed by DNSai LLC. This extension stores and encrypts your passwords LOCALLY on your device. No data is transmitted to, stored on, or processed by any external servers, cloud services, or third-party systems.
IMPORTANT: Smart Key Vault is designed as a simple, local-only password storage solution. It is NOT a full-featured enterprise password manager. If you require advanced features, cross-device synchronization, secure backup systems, or professional support, we strongly recommend using more robust password management solutions such as:
- 1Password
- Bitwarden
- LastPass
- Dashlane
- KeePass
2. Data Collection and Storage
2.1 What We Collect
DNSai LLC collects ZERO data from Smart Key Vault users. We do not collect:
- Personal information
- Passwords or credentials
- Usage statistics or analytics
- Browser history or activity
- IP addresses or location data
- Device identifiers
- Any other user data whatsoever
2.2 Local Storage Only
All data stored by Smart Key Vault remains EXCLUSIVELY on your local device:
- Passwords are encrypted using AES-256-GCM encryption
- Encryption keys are derived using PBKDF2 with 100,000 iterations
- All encrypted data is stored in Chrome's local extension storage
- Your master password is NEVER stored - only a verification hash
2.3 No Cloud Synchronization
Smart Key Vault does NOT offer cloud synchronization. This is intentional.
Benefits of local-only storage:
- Your passwords never leave your device
- No exposure to cloud service breaches
- No dependency on third-party server availability
- No risk of man-in-the-middle attacks during sync
- Complete privacy - even we cannot access your data
Risks of local-only storage:
- No automatic backup or recovery
- Data loss if Chrome is reset or uninstalled
- No cross-device access
- Complete user responsibility for data protection
3. Why Local Password Storage Matters
3.1 The Problem with Insecure Password Practices
Storing passwords in insecure ways is DANGEROUS and bad practice:
- Plain text files can be easily accessed by malware or unauthorized users
- Browser-saved passwords may sync to cloud services without encryption
- Sticky notes, spreadsheets, or documents provide zero protection
- Reusing passwords across sites means one breach compromises all accounts
- Weak passwords can be cracked in seconds by modern computing
3.2 The Cloud Storage Dilemma
While cloud-based password managers offer convenience, they also present risks:
- Centralized targets for hackers (one breach = millions of users exposed)
- Dependency on third-party security practices
- Data may be subject to government requests or subpoenas
- Service discontinuation could limit access to your data
- Potential for insider threats at the service provider
3.3 The Local Storage Approach
Smart Key Vault takes a different approach by keeping everything local:
- Your data exists only on your device
- No company (including DNSai LLC) can access your passwords
- No network vulnerabilities or server breaches can expose your data
- You maintain complete control and ownership of your data
HOWEVER, this approach places FULL RESPONSIBILITY on you, the user, for:
- Maintaining secure backups
- Remembering your master password
- Protecting your device from unauthorized access
- Understanding the limitations and risks
4. Risks and Limitations - Please Read
4.1 Password Recovery is Impossible
WARNING: If you forget your master password, there is NO WAY to recover your stored passwords. This is not a limitation - it is a security feature.
- DNSai LLC cannot recover your master password
- DNSai LLC cannot decrypt your stored data
- There is no "forgot password" option
- There is no backdoor, master key, or recovery mechanism
- Your data will be PERMANENTLY INACCESSIBLE
4.2 Data Loss Scenarios
Your locally stored data can be PERMANENTLY LOST in the following situations:
| Scenario | Description |
|---|---|
| Chrome Browser Reset | Resetting Chrome to default settings will DELETE all extension data |
| Chrome Uninstallation | Uninstalling Chrome may delete all extension storage data |
| Extension Uninstallation | Removing Smart Key Vault will DELETE all stored passwords |
| Chrome Profile Deletion | Deleting or switching Chrome profiles will lose extension data |
| OS Reinstallation | Reinstalling your operating system will delete all local data |
| Device Loss/Theft/Damage | Physical loss of your device means loss of your passwords |
| Hard Drive Failure | Storage device failure can corrupt or destroy extension data |
| Malware or Ransomware | Malicious software could delete or encrypt your browser data |
| Chrome Updates or Bugs | Browser updates could potentially corrupt extension storage |
4.3 Security Limitations
While Smart Key Vault uses strong encryption, local storage has limitations:
- If your device is compromised, attackers may access encrypted data
- Physical access to your device could enable brute-force attacks
- Keyloggers could capture your master password
- Screen capture malware could expose visible passwords
- Memory-reading attacks could potentially extract decrypted data
5. User Responsibilities
By using Smart Key Vault, YOU assume FULL RESPONSIBILITY for:
5.1 Password Security
- Creating a strong, memorable master password
- NEVER sharing your master password with anyone
- NEVER sharing your individual stored passwords unnecessarily
- Using unique passwords for each account

6. Third-Party Services
Smart Key Vault may interact with the following external services:
6.1 Favicon Retrieval
- Website favicons may be loaded from Google's favicon service
- This occurs only when viewing entries with website URLs
- Only the domain name is sent to retrieve the icon
- No password or credential data is ever transmitted
